You can use it to speed up all sorts of tasks that you do regularly on the Mac. The Alfred Mac app is all about productivity! If you’ve ever heard of a tool called TextExpander, this is that on steroids. I recently published one on how to easily cut a shape out of another shape. I also have a few Affinity Designer tutorials I’m working on. In Affinity Designer, you can find this under the “More” button when you go to export an image. Tip: For saving images for the web, the best color profile for Mac is sRGB IEC61966-2.1. It’s available from the developer’s website and the Mac App Store. And it’s not a subscription, this is simply a one-time purchase, and you get all the updates forever. The best part about Affinity Designer is that it only costs $49.99. Affinity Designer is by far the best Adobe Illustrator alternative I’ve ever found. The Creative Cloud costs $50+/month, and if I were to get Illustrator by itself, it would cost me $20+/month. But running a small business and having to pay for everything myself, was just too expensive. I have used Affinity Designer for 4+ years to create all of the images you see on this blog, as well as my other sites. Affinity Designer (premium, M1 optimized)Īffinity Designer is a vector graphics program developed by Serif for macOS. If you prefer something local that’s not on the cloud I also recommend the free MacPass app. □ 1Password 7 dark mode on Mac (Image source: 1Password) Many of us know how hard it is to get our parents to use best practices when it comes to online security. They also have a family plan available, which can be handy. Tip: One-time passwords, along with an authenticator app, are always safer than SMS.ġPassword’s personal plan costs $2.99 a month (billed annually). This is important to me as it means I spend less time grabbing my phone. It also supports one-time passwords, which means you can use it as a Google Authenticator alternative. The Mac App is beautiful, along with dark mode. I have used 1Password for years now and love it. And second, you should never use the same password twice, ever. Why is this important? First off, it helps to prevent from having to write them down anywhere. Most people these days are using some type of password manager. Some of these apps are also available for PC (Windows). Rosetta 2: Not optimized yet for Apple Silicon, but still runs via Rosetta 2. For those of you who don’t know, Apple takes a cut of the sale (30%) from developers when you use the App Store. This makes it super convenient to reinstall apps later down the road and saves a lot of time. While I always try to support developers where I can, I do prefer purchasing from the Mac App Store. The Mac apps below (listed in alphabetical order) consist of free and premium apps straight from the developer’s website and apps from the Mac App Store. So for most of my life, I’ve been knee-deep (more than most) in the Microsoft world of Active Directory, SharePoint, Exchange, etc. In 2013 I received the Microsoft MVP Award in the Windows Expert-IT Pro category. I switched to Macs back in 2018 after using PCs exclusively for over 20 years. Hopefully, you’ll find an awesome new Mac app or setting in this list that will help make your life easier! I’ve also included some of the tweaks and settings I change whenever I get a new Mac or reinstall macOS. So to keep from repeating myself over and over, I’ve compiled a list of what I think are the best Mac apps. Another reason for this post is that visitors, friends, and even family are always asking me which apps I use for specific tasks. Using Google Adwordsĭigital marketing is a constantly evolving industry that requires attention and daily adjustments, and while Google Adwords is an invaluable tool it also takes some getting used to. Understanding impression share is similar to understanding marketing share it is the amount of customer eyeballs you purchased out of all the possible customers eyeballs in your market.Ībsolute top impression rate is only slightly different it is the percentage that your ad is shown as the very first ad above the organic results of a search, which you can see highlighted in the image to the right. Top impression share is the percentage that your ads are shown above the organic search results as a percentage of all the impressions you could have received. Google classifies top impression share and absolute impression share as prominence metrics, which means that they are estimating your ads visibility and location on a search page. Impression share metrics are the new go-to on Google Adwords. So what metrics are you supposed to look at now to understand how your advertisements are doing? As new data abilities come up and our interpretation and understanding of how ads and consumers act online evolves, new ways of looking at performance have surfaced. Why would Google get rid of average position? Well, it simply wasn’t that valuable of information anymore. If you have been using the platform for a while now you will know that average position was a metric that took into account your max bid and quality score and gave your ad a rank, and was generally considered one of the top metrics to look at. Here is what you need to know about the change, and what you need to know about the new prominence metrics that the platform uses.Īverage position was once a key metric on the Google Adwords platform, but Google has since retired this from its reporting. If you’re unfamiliar with automated bid strategies, you can find out more here from Google about automated bids. You may have heard that Google Adwords changed a key metric in their reporting abilities in Q4 of 2019. This change in bid strategy options coincides with Google’s recent reporting changes which eliminates average position for “very top, above the fold, and below the fold” as descriptions of your ad results. We’ve found that average CPC rates tend to be 3-4 times more costly than our standard adwords campaigns which are more focused on high quality brand leads. Google recommends that you not set your bid limit too low so that you don’t prevent yourself from reaching your visibility goal.Īs with outranking share, this is a much more expensive bid strategy from a CPC perspective. If you only wanted to be in the absolute top spot, then you’d allocate 100% of your budget to that impression share target. Now you set a bid limit and determine how much of your budget is to be allocated to one of the three available page locations. This new strategy still allows you to think similarly, but the bidding process is different. It was a very effective strategy, especially when your competitor wasn’t advertising in search. Previously, with the now defunct outrank share, you could bid directly against a competitor’s search results. You can set Target Impression Share as a bid strategy on a campaign level or as part of a portfolio strategy across multiple campaigns. You would use it if your campaign goal was to “show in a certain percentage of eligible auctions” which means that you’re maximizing your share of search impressions agsint your competition. Google suggests that this is an effective strategy if your business goal is to increase or stabilize awareness. The strategy automatically sets bids where you can choose if you want to display on the absolute top of a page (position 1), on the top of the page (above the fold), or anywhere else on the Google search page results (bottom). Target Impression Share is the newest smart bidding strategy being offered by Google Ads throughout their Google Search Newtork. The Type 2 format has since been used as one basis for the modern OpenType Format.īy using PostScript (PS) language, the glyphs are described with cubic Bézier curves (as opposed to the quadratic curves of TrueType), and thus a single set of glyphs can be resized through simple mathematical transformations, which can then be sent to a PostScript-ready printer. Font development tools such as Fontographer added the ability to create Type 1 fonts. Immediately following the announcement of TrueType, Adobe published ”Adobe type 1 font format”, a detailed specification for the format. It was this issue that led Apple to design their own system, TrueType, around 1991. The cost of the licensing was considered very high at this time, and Adobe continued to stonewall on more attractive rates. Other differences further added to the confusion. Type 3 fonts allowed for all the sophistication of the PostScript language, but without the standardized approach to hinting (though some companies such as ATF implemented their own proprietary schemes) or an encryption scheme. Adobe nevertheless required anyone working with Type 1 fonts to license their technology. Despite these measures, Adobe's scheme was quickly reverse-engineered by other players in the industry. Originally, Adobe kept the details of their hinting scheme undisclosed and used a (simple) encryption scheme to protect Type 1 outlines and hints, which still persists today (although the encryption scheme and key has since been published by Adobe). Type 1 and Type 3 fonts, though introduced by Adobe in 1984 as part of the PostScript page description language, did not see widespread use until March 1985 when the first laser printer to use the PostScript language, the Apple LaserWriter, was introduced.Įven then, in 1985, the outline fonts were resident only in the printer, and the screen used bitmap fonts as substitutes for outline fonts.Īlthough originally part of PostScript, Type 1 fonts used a simplified set of drawing operations compared to ordinary PostScript (programmatic elements such as loops and variables were removed, much like PDF), but Type 1 fonts added "hints" to help low-resolution rendering. "PostScript fonts" may also separately be used to refer to a basic set of fonts included as standards in the PostScript system, such as Times New Roman, Helvetica, and Avant Garde. This system uses PostScript file format to encode font information. PostScript fonts are font files encoded in outline font specifications developed by Adobe Systems for professional digital typesetting. A live-action film adaptation directed by Guy Ritchie was released on May 24, 2019. Aladdin 's success led to various derived works and other material inspired by the film, including two direct-to-video sequels The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996), an animated television series, and a Broadway adaptation. The film's home video VHS release also set a sales record and grossed about $500 million in the United States. Upon release, it became the first animated feature to reach the half-billion-dollar mark, and was the highest-grossing animated film of all time until it was surpassed by The Lion King (1994).Īladdin garnered two Academy Awards, as well as other accolades for its soundtrack, which had the first and only number from a Disney feature to earn a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, for the film's " A Whole New World", sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. It was a commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1992 with an earning of over $504 million in worldwide box office revenue. It received positive reviews from critics (particularly for Williams' performance). The musical score was composed by Alan Menken and features six songs with lyrics written by both Ashman and Tim Rice, who took over following Ashman's death.Īladdin was released on November 11, 1992. The animators based their designs on the work of caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, and computers were used for both finishing the artwork and creating some animated elements. Lyricist Howard Ashman first pitched the idea, and the screenplay went through three drafts before then-Disney Studios president Jeffrey Katzenberg agreed to its production. With the genie's help, Aladdin disguises himself as a wealthy prince and tries to impress the Sultan in order to win the heart of his free-spirited daughter, Princess Jasmine, as the Sultan's evil vizier Jafar plots to steal the magic lamp for his own uses. Featuring the voices of Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Frank Welker, Gilbert Gottfried, and Douglas Seale, the film follows the titular Aladdin, an Arabian street urchin, who finds a magic lamp containing a genie. The film was produced and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements from a screenplay they co-wrote with the writing team of Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. It is based on the Arabic folktale " Aladdin" from the One Thousand and One Nights.
